Mahin Remodel
Our clients, with their eclectic taste and penchant for edgy contemporary design, entrusted us to breathe new life into their 70-year-old home. The project presented a unique challenge, as we sought to harmonize the home’s 50’s charm with our clients’ modern vision. One of the defining features of the remodel was the incorporation of found objects and interesting furniture, seamlessly integrated into the space to create a curated blend of old and new. We capitalized on the discovery of original horizontal wood behind plaster walls, establishing a repeatable design vernacular that echoed throughout the remodel. The juxtaposition of clean minimalist elements against the raw beauty of old fur timbers, milled over a century ago in Port Madison, created a captivating visual contrast. From a sustainability standpoint, we were also pleased to be able to preserve the wood floors.
In our pursuit of efficiency and innovation, we mapped the house to identify dead unused spaces, repurposing them in clever ways. A corridor behind the stairs was transformed into a bathroom and closet, while unused footprint space was cleverly repurposed to accommodate the client’s desire for a real master bedroom with its own bathroom. The stairway, once a utilitarian element, was elevated to a central design feature, with rectangular window holes creating fun void elements and interesting sight lines that enhanced the sense of space. In the kitchen, we pushed the boundaries of modern design, incorporating a state-of-the-art recessed exhaust hood/fan flush with the ceiling to maximize space and maintain an open feel. The unused mudroom at the back of the house was transformed into a spacious pantry and cabinets for the kitchen, allowing for no over-the-counter cabinets to clutter the space – all optimizing functionality without compromising on style.
