Grand New Construction
“The Grand House,” designed by Lindal Homes with modifications by the clients and 2atara design and construction, is a contemporary, single-story residence of approximately 3,600 square feet located on Bainbridge Island. The single-story design is specifically intended for aging in place, accommodating the needs of the retired couple who will reside there. The home incorporates sustainable features and efficient systems throughout, including super-insulated windows, spray-in rigid insulation, and an efficient HVAC system with a heat exchanger hot water system. The house is wired with a commercial-grade electrical system to accommodate multiple electric car chargers.
The exterior of the house features shou sugi ban siding, a Japanese-inspired charred wood sourced from sustainably harvested forests. This unique siding is torched with fire, creating a blackened surface that requires no paint and virtually no maintenance, making it a very sustainable solution. The siding is arranged as a rain screen system over a Zip System waterproof barrier. Native ferns and plants will be encouraged to regrow on the site for a zero-scape, low-maintenance landscape design. Interior features include custom furniture milled from cedar and maple trees that were felled on the property, and the decks utilize Luna wood, a thermally modified ash known for its durability.
