New boathouse from the water

The first phase of our Waterfront Bungalow project, the construction of the 200 sf boathouse with cantilevered deck over the water is coming along nicely, as seen in this photo taken from the water earlier today. A Gift of Symmetry

Now this is an example of truly beautiful design!  It has all the things: a vegetated roof, gorgeous symmetry to define the entrance without a traditional door, use of metal to create slender shapes and so much more…  Nailed it!  Learn more about this home designed by Andersson Wise Architects here:

Grateful for all our amazing clients

We are so grateful for all our amazing clients! Here is what one recent client had to say after working with our team.

“We are amazed at the design/build talent at 2atara. Craden took one look at our ”problem kitchen” and new immediately what needed to be done. With minimal changes, he transformed our great room and opened up views that we did not even know existed. Everything about the kitchen remodel was spectacular from the layout to the cabinet pulls. It is now very sophisticated and transforms existing elements in the room. Craden was great to work with and very collaborative. In the end, deferring to him on almost everything was absolutely the right choice. He has an EYE. We are looking for another project just so we can hire him again. The guys on the construction team were also terrific, responsive and easy to work with. We would hire them again and feel we made a great decision to go with2atara design + construction for our remodel.”

This staircase delights us

This staircase just delights us! A perfect combination of clever design and functionality – a staircase that is also a piece of furniture. May all staircases be as nifty as this one! Check out our Pinterest board for more inspiring staircases.

Jones Kitchen

This beautiful home on the tranquil waters of Port Blakley recently underwent a significant kitchen remodel, reorienting it to maximize views of the harbor and help the space breathe. The appliances, lighting and color scheme were chosen for their subtlety, keeping the focus on the views beyond.

The integration of modifications to massive columns and a river rock fireplace into the new contemporary kitchen was a way to tie the rest of the public spaces into the kitchen remodel.  Milled wood and brass plates wrapped on the bases of the columns were just a few of the unique design features added.  Stonework modifications on the chimney gives the impression the stones are peeling off and flowing across the floor. These stones were repurposed from a dismantled chimney at another 2atara project on the Island.

This innovative new kitchen was designed with collaboration at its heart.  The space was envisioned in a way so that the client, a gifted wood-worker, could contribute his skill. At 2atara we value this kind of collaboration, allowing clients to feel more invested in their projects.

An inspiring downspout

How about this for an inspiring downspout? In our rainy Pacific Northwest climate, we too seek to celebrate the beautiful movement of water through sustainable design.

Parker Remodel

When our clients first approached us with their plans to demo their 2400 sf 1960s rambler and build a new home from scratch, we immediately jumped at the challenge to salvage the home instead.  The significant waste and environmental impacts from new construction are something we like to avoid when possible, and we love the challenge of making something old shine once again.  Using sketch-up modelling and our design/build expertise we were able to help the client visualize how to successfully approach and execute such a project.

The renovation kicked off with a large stand-alone garage being picked up by a giant crane and relocated onto its new pad.  Between the garage and original house an infill wing addition was built with new entry, dining, large chefs kitchen, and mud room. With a significant amount of site infill two courtyards were created and 300 sf of deck and patio added.

The entire house was then remodeled inside and out transforming the dated rambler into a contemporary Scandinavian farmhouse.  The 737 sf addition was designed around a giant sliding glass door repurposed from another project. The home was re-designed for solar-gain with massive windows on the south side to bring in ample light.

A Sustainable Mudpit

This might look like a mud pit to the untrained eye.  Actually, it is that too, but we get excited about this mud pit here at 2atara.  Those pin piles you see are metal tubes that are driven into the ground for sustainability reasons.  Causing less disruption of the land, they allow us to lightly rest our concrete pad on the soil.  By not having to dig giant holes for foundations, nearby trees and their root systems are protected and they don’t have to be cut down for construction.
