This week, 2atara design and construction began installing the stunning Luna wood decks at “The Grand House,” a custom Bainbridge Island residence designed for aging in place. Nestled among native trees with filtered views of Puget Sound, the decks offer a serene vantage point to take in the water through a veil of green.

Crafted from thermally modified ash, the Luna wood is chosen for its durability and graceful aging—echoing the home’s ethos of sustainability and timeless design.

“The Grand House” Dons Sustainable Shou Sugi Ban Siding

Construction is progressing well on “The Grand House,” a contemporary residence designed for aging in place. Created by Lindal Homes and 2atara design and construction, the 3,600 square-foot home prioritizes sustainability.

Currently, workers are installing the striking shou sugi ban siding, a Japanese-inspired charred wood sourced from sustainable forests. This unique and low-maintenance feature highlights the home’s commitment to both design and environmental responsibility. This student-driven event, organized by middle school students, set a record for Melanesian Women Today (MWT), a Bainbridge-founded organization dedicated to empowering women and girls in Melanesian communities through education and cultural pride. The event brought together about 200 community members and showcased local talent.

ReFashion Sewdown
We also supported the ReFashion Sewdown at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, celebrating sustainable fashion. Artists transformed scrap fabrics into innovative outfits, with a lively runway show.

Our recent renovation of a beautiful Bainbridge Island home, originally designed by renowned architect James Cutler, has been featured in the Spring 2025 issue of PNW Bainbridge magazine. The article, “Perfectly Pleasant: A Family Home for All Seasons,” highlights the transformation of this 2269 sq. ft. beachfront property, showcasing how we at 2atara worked with the family to update the home for modern living while maintaining its original charm and architectural integrity.
The project focused on creating a more open and functional living space, updating the kitchen and bathrooms and maximizing the stunning water views.  Key features of the renovation include:opening up the main living area for a seamless flow between the kitchen, dining room and family room, discreetly incorporating a Murphy bed for extra sleeping space in the media room and relocating the master suite to capture the best ocean views. The result is a stunning home that perfectly balances contemporary comfort with the timeless elegance of its original design.
